2026 North Coast Wine Challenge
The Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge strives to be an educational platform for young wine industry professionals growing in their careers. Associate Judges are nominated by their peers and attend the judging process, each assigned a panel with our highly experienced wine judges. They get to learn and network with winemakers, sommeliers, media people and other seasoned wine industry professionals.

Ayden Aghaie-Gray
The Matheson / Healdsburg
Ayden Aghaie-Gray is a Certified Sommelier and Lead Sommelier at The Matheson. Born and raised in Napa Valley, he has been immersed in wine culture from an early age, fostering a deep appreciation for both the craft and the industry. In his role at The Matheson, Ayden tastes between 10 and 30 wines daily and regularly participates in structured blind tastings, continuously refining his palate and expanding his understanding of global wine styles.

Andrew "Drew" Lombardi
Lombardi Wines / Petaluma
Andrew (Drew) Lombardi is an associate winemaker at Lombardi Wines with hands-on experience spanning every stage of production, from vineyard to bottle. Since joining the winery in 2016, he has played a key role in harvest and cellar operations while also supporting marketing and direct-to-consumer sales. Drew has completed harvests at notable wineries in California, France, and New Zealand, and in 2024 served as a Harvest Enologist at Mumm Napa. He holds a degree in Wine and Viticulture (Enology) from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is a founding member of the Hilinski’s Hope Student Advisory Board, advocating for mental health and wellness.

Brendan Loftus
ATPGroup / Windsor
Brendan grew up in Healdsburg and began working harvest at the age of 19. His initial exposure to wineries came early through a family connection in the industry. After graduating cum laude with a degree in Enology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, his passion for travel led him abroad for three years and five harvests across Australia, Argentina, Chile, Hungary, and Portugal. Exposure to diverse winemaking regions, languages, and techniques sharpened his winemaking skills and expanded his technical understanding. Following six additional harvests in Sonoma County, Brendan recently began his role as an Enology Sales Representative for ATPGroup, continuing his career in the wine industry.
